good morning, america. new overnight, after the deadly superstorm. thousands still trapped in their homes in new jersey. much of the town of hoboken underwater. some stranded in cars. now, power and gas at a crisis point across the region. vehicles lined up for miles. anger boiling over. danger in the city. josh plunges into the frightening streets of downtown new york in total darkness. our night vision showing many living in fear as the temperatures are dropping. as sam takes to the air to look at the unbelievable destruction from sandy's path. >> wow. new york harbor. that is staten island. look at all those boats. five days to go. barack obama and mitt romney dash back to the trail, as the

clock ticks to election day. this morning, our bottom line on each side's path to victory. the last-minute moves. and this little girl's emotional plea going viral. >> i'm tired of barack obama and mitt romney. and jaws-dropper. the woman who saved her own life by punching out a 12-foot tiger shark. she tells us about the astonishing moment when her martial arts kicked in. the karate chop that saved her life. and good morning, everyone. hello to robin at home. we are getting back to normal here in times square. but look at these live shots. >> rabbit rabbit. >> rabbit rabbit, robin. let's look at the live shots downtown right now. still so dark in lower manhattan.

this is a city divided right now. it's going to take days, maybe longer, for the power to come back. and the scale of destruction is becoming so clear in so many places. look at the aerial shots of breezy point, new york, home to generations of firefighters and police. hit so hard by 9/11. now, hit again. more than 100 homes destroyed. one of so many communities that were absolutely devastated. >> those are creepy pictures. here's what we know in terms of the numbers. 76 dead. an estimated $20 billion in property loss. new york subways are starting to run in limited areas, limited service. but they are running free through friday. that should help with all of the gridlock we saw yesterday. >> let's hope. and look at the astonishing video we are seening. fire in greenwich, connecticut. multimillion-dollar mansions destroyed. we're going to new jersey and the crisis in hoboken. right across the river from us,

nearly 20,000 people stranded. the national guard now on-hand to help. and alex perez has been reporting through the night. good morning, alex. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. this is the area the residents call the bottom of the bathtub. across the city this morning there are blocks like this one, completely underwater. it's been a long, cold night for those waiting to be rescued. overnight, panic rising, just as fast as the floodwaters that trapped nearly 20,000 people in hoboken. >> i was out in my car for a half hour. and i didn't want to go in the water. >> reporter: as darkness fell, 25% of the new jersey city lay underwater. many of its 50,000 residents still without power. and after four days, the essentials are starting to run low. >> it's really scary. we don't have that much food. we have a little bit. >> reporter: the new jersey national guard and the u.s. army rescued hundreds of people from their homes on wednesday. lifting them, one by one, into

trucks and transporting them to higher ground. first responders, knocking on doors and delivering food and water to residents on upper levels. even after night fall, the military rescue trucks are still here, lined up, going block by block. making sure no one is stranded inside. soaking wet and cold, daniel got stranded in his car until help arrived. >> they got through. >> reporter: it could be seven to ten days before hoboken has power again. in the meantime, the city is pulling together in the wake of a disaster. creating makeshift charging stations, powered by generators. an 11-year-old girl opened up her own internet cafe to those in need of a power cord. >> a place to charge our phones just so we can let other people know we're okay. >> reporter: and take a look at this picture taken by giants quarterback eli manning, holding a flashlight as he takes a picture of some of the damage of his own building here in

hoboken. the one thing we've seen here over and over and over is people trying to help each other. complete strangers sharing food, sharing phones and sharing clothes. just trying to make sure they all make it through all of this. amy? >> it's nice to see when a storm brings out the best in people. alex perez, thanks so much. we want to turn, now, to sam. sam, you had a stunning look of the complete devastation from the air. in all of your 30 years of experience, have you ever seen anything quite like this? >> no, amy, because i've never seen a storm like this hit an area so populated. there's so many stories to be told of this region. let me show you one of the pictures we brought back. this is the arthur kill that leads into the atlantic. you might fly over this and miss this point until you look right here. and we've covered so many oil slicks, so many fuel oil spills. that's the giant -- that's the size of a giant tanker right beside it. and this fuel oil spill goes all

the way out in the new york harbor. no one has started talking about that problem yet. and all of the pictures on the ground are so horrible. but when you get in the air, there's no words. from the air, complete devastation doesn't even describe it. i can't believe this. as the water recedes, the scope of the damage is just now coming into focus. wow. new york harbor. that is staten island. look at all those boats. this is a perfect example of storm surge damage inside new york harbor. this is staten island. but it's not the open coast. look at that. look at these boats, of all sizes. all boats, big boats, tossed up against that building. that was some powerful surge. just south of manhattan, this is great keels harbor, new york. every pier is washed off. every boat is tossed in.

whoa. look how far that goes. east across new york harbor, this is the tip of coney island. look at the debris. when you see it, house after house after house. that's just unbelievable. that is the fire zone of breezy point. now, that's more than 100 houses in that community. before. and now. when your house survives a storm like that, you just don't think you're going to lose it to fire right after the storm. and just look at hoboken, new jersey, from above. 25% of the city is still underwater. the national guard went in to set up supply stations right in front of city hall. you can actually see the supplies they've set up. now, that's belmar, new jersey. that's where the boardwalk should be. take a look at where it is now. town after town, annihilated in

the wake of superstorm sandy. we're not done with the wind yet. while everyone's cleaning up, sandy is way up here in canada. but all of these winds, when you see the arrows the way they're going. these winds across new york city, are 20-mile-per-hour to 30-mile-per-hour winds that will take us all the way through today. that's all the way from the great lakes, well back into new england, putting up with the strong, gusty winds again today. >> and, sam, we're not done with the threats yet, either. gas leaks could send homes up in flames at any moment. abc's terry moran has the latest on that from bay head. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. as dawn comes up over the atlantic behind me, it's hard to imagine that placid ocean obliterating a sand dune and slamming these homes. you can see it here, knocking homes off foundations. ripping out the infrastructure.

there's countless gas lines ruptured up and down this shoreline. that's the main danger now, gas. >> one spark, i know it. just really never expected to be what it was. >> reporter: mary ward, like so many here on the jersey shore, has been through so much. >> everywhere you go, you hear -- just the gas, all the open gas lines, going. just scared to death. >> reporter: fire now stalks the shore. this blaze fueled by natural gas leaks. the battle now is to prevent a catastrophe after the catastrophe. do you hear that? that is the sound that everyone left in these towns is fearing the most right now. it is a hissing gas main. you hear it on street after street, right up the shore. you can fell the gas in the air. and fire officials are concerned that these towns are ticking

time bombs. >> once the gas gets under that house, we have to get out of here. >> reporter: in the town of ortley beach, frank is living in real danger. have you called the gas company about this? >> five times. >> reporter: what's their response been? >> we'll get there as soon as you can. >> reporter: you can see the gas pouring out. it ruptured monday night. where are all of the gas trucks? you got down the block. we got down the block. why can't we get gas trucks down the block? >> reporter: one thing there is no question. we saw only a handful of gas crews out on the streets. just a handful of gas crews. the utility here is overwhelmed. amy? >> that is some frightening stuff. terry moran, thanks so much. we want to show you some extremely long lines at gas stations right now in new jersey. there, you see. basics are in short supply in so many areas. anger, frustration is on the rise, as you might imagine.

abc's ron claiborne is in richfield, new jersey, with the latest on this. good morning, ron. >> reporter: good morning, amy. i'm at the service station at the new jersey turnpike. take a look at this line. motorists are telling us they're waiting one to two-plus hours to get to the pump, to get gas in their vehicles because this is one of the few service stations around that is open for miles. long lines, triggering short tempers. >> i'm down to the bottom of my fuel. i don't know. i don't even know where the next gas station is. >> reporter: in some places, cars snake down a half-mile or more on the highway. weary hurricane sandy survivors desperate for gas to power their generators and their cars. >> no more gas. >> reporter: the manager of this bp station on new york's long island said he sold about 10,000 gallons on wednesday, three-times what he sells in a normal day. >> it was over the bridge earlier in the morning. >> reporter: in new york, more than 80% of the gas stations,

unable to open, even if they have gas. there's no power to pump it. here on the jersey turnpike, the opposite problem. there's power but stations are running dry and can't get new deliveries. cars, more than 100 feet. our dan harris drove around northern new jersey for hours looking for gas. discovering interminable lines. meantime, electricity is still out across 15 states this morning. overnight, 6 million households and businesses. that's as many as 44 million people, according to the associated press, still in the dark. residents forced to adjust to a maddening waiting game as power is only slowly restored. a process that could take wakes. >> not only living in the dark. it's cold inside. >> reporter: and nearly 1 million long island power customers were hit with outages during the height of the storm.

nearly its entire network affected. >> it's clearly the worst storm we've encountered. it can't get much worse than this. >> reporter: cell phone service, many cell phones not working in the affected area, forcing people to revert to the old-fashioned way of making a phone call, pay phones. george? >> looking all over for those. ron, thanks. we're going to turn to the race for the white house, now. it's "your voice, your vote" with just five days to go. and both sides back to all-out campaigning. jon karl with the battleground. and we have some new evidence that president obama's response to the superstorm has solidified his position. >> reporter: that's right, george. solid approval of the president's response to the storm. and narrow leads in all of the battleground states. with just five days left, this campaign is about to return with a vengeance. not only did president obama tour the storm damage with new jersey governor chris christie. he also seemed to make a new

republican best friend. >> i cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and compassion for our state and for the people of our state. >> reporter: the president returned the favor. >> i have to say that governor christie throughout this process has been responsive. he's been aggressive in making sure that the state got out in front of this incredible storm. >> reporter: cooperation on disaster relief works. it also plays well politically. in the latest abc news/"washington post" poll, 78% of likely voters said the president has done a good or excellent job handling the storm. in the wake of the storm, romney struck a more positive tone, campaigning in florida. but not directly criticizing the president. >> good democrats love america just like good republicans love america. >> reporter: his daughter dressed as datety perry.

and one of his boys as the grim reaper. the abc news/"washington post" poll shows the race is tied nationally. 49% for mitt romney. 49% for barack obama. but each side seems convinced their winning. the obama campaign points to the battleground states. all eight of the states where they're campaigning the hardest, the president is tied or winning. but romney points to michigan, pennsylvania and minnesota, three states thought to be solidly democratic, but where obama is now playing defense. the president, back on the campaign trail today. going to wisconsin, colorado and nevada. mitt romney will be campaigning in virginia. george, you can expect both of them to be campaigning virtually nonstop between now and tuesday. >> no question about it. they're going to be focused on the white battleground states and the pink in north carolina, over the next several days. want to give you a sense of each side's strategy. what the obama campaign is trying to do is build a firewall

in the big american states, iowa, wisconsin. he gets to 271 electoral votes. and if mitt romney wins all of the other battlegrounds right there, he'll come up a little bit short, which may explain, jon, one of the reasons the romney campaign is trying to put new efforts into minnesota and pennsylvania and michigan, where they have been behind so far. but if they're able to pick off any one of those three states, that's enough to put him over the top. and one of the things we're seeing, you talk about the travel in the last few days. these battleground states, jon, are also completely inundated by ads. we got some fun -- fun for us, but not so much fun for this little girl, who is pretty sick of it, right? >> reporter: yeah. i've got to tell you, george. if you get tired of all the ads, the personal attacks, the lies and distortions, you would understand how 4-year-old abigael evans feels. take a listen.

>> just because i'm tired of barack obama and mitt romney. >> that's why you're crying? oh. it will be over soon, abi. okay? the election will be over soon, okay? >> okay. >> those campaigns and all of us might have to apologize to abi. let's get news from josh. >> we're going to begin with the dangerous chemical fire that's forced more than 1,000 people in louisville, kentucky, to leave their homes. the blaze erupting at the scene of this trail derailment here. torches ignited fumes leaking from the cars. cyber attacks reading questions about our personal information. hackers broke into state computers in south carolina, compromising some 3.6 million tax returns, including millions of social security numbers and 387,000 credit and debit card numbers. state officials say, like most

other government agencies across the country, south carolina never encrypted that data to protect it from hackers because it's such an expensive and lengthy process. and this morning another big bank to be in big trouble, for allegedly manipulating the price of electricity in california. regulators are threatening to fine barclays $470 million for gaming the markets for lower prices just so it can make bigger profits later. the bank denies the scheme. an unusual sight to bring you along the mexico/arizona border. smugglers made a makeshift ramp to drive over the border. they abandoned the jeep some 14 feet in the air. sam, how about national weather? >> as we do that, i want to thank wabc for giving us the flight yesterday. they're always in the air, by the way, and the best in the business. let me show you what's going on with this cold air that drops behind the storm.

wait until you see these temperatures. it's what folks without power don't need, these temperatures. look at the high temperatures. they're close to the 40s by sunday and maybe monday in new york city. we're going to see colder air dipping in after that. the possibility of all of this rain into the northwest, now drying out, is good news. it's been six days of heavy rain in seattle, also in the portland area. we've seen california begin to dry out a little bit. that will happen during the day.

>> thanks so much. and there's a controversy brewing over the new york city marathon and whether it should be run this weekend. the question, is the city really ready? are the police ready to police it the way they have to? >> big controversy there. and switching gears, we're going to meet a woman who took on a shark, punching it out. in a dramatic life-saving move, it was her martial arts training that kicked in. no pun intended. maybe it was. but this is an incredible story. we want to get right to josh, now. this is a city so divided right now. >> indeed. if you don't -- if you don't understand the geography of manhattan, imagine a line cut across. you don't have to go far to see you can be in the same city but an entirely different world, literally, from block to block. it's at night when you can see the difference. manhattan split in half. those with power and those without. the moment it happened, captured on this time lapse.

48 hours later, in midtown manhattan, the lights shined bright. people shopped and enjoyed dinner out as if sandy never happened. people packing the restaurants and the stores. out in force, again a night like any other. almost to believe that a five-minute walk away, we'll be walking in total darkness. that's where we just left. the lights of midtown manhattan. but we've found the line of demarcation. this building alit. that building in total darkness. that building, like all of the buildings of lower manhattan tonight. here, with the help of night vision gear, you can see figures on the sidewalks. one holding a candle. another wearing a head lamp. you can see, store front after store front, apartment building after apartment building, all

completely dark. chrissy germany is living among the powerless conditions. >> it's scary. you have to make it work. >> reporter: we're 20 blocks from electricity, from civilization. but here, it feels like a different city. there is really an eerie calm here. the total darkness broken by the flashing lights. the sirens blaring. yet, in darkness, we find families refusing to give up on halloween. do you have a sense of how different it is to the north? >> no. we haven't been in civilization for a while. >> reporter: is this your favorite halloween? >> i guess so. >> reporter: would you like it if they turned out the lights every halloween? >> yeah. that makes it more spooky. >> it was like walking into another world.

that group, so many cut off not just from power and lights, but also from information. have no idea about the storm. one other thg we should note, we've been noting it, the temperatures are falling in the city precipitously, sam. >> yep. >> it is getting colder and colder. that's going to be a problem we this weekend if they don't get the power back on. >> i'm in lower manhattan. i walked into my apartment. it is really cold. you think this weekend, it's going to get even colder. >> for a lot of everybody. trying to keep blankets and sweaters on. another controversy in the city, the world-famous race is under fire. mayor bloomberg saying the new york city marathon is set to take place this sunday, in spite of the devastation so many people are coping with after sandy. john schriffen has the latest on the controversy. >> reporter: good morning. it is a tricky political decision for the city. run this massive marathon, despite the serious issues plaguing the city? possibly creating more chaos? or cancel an iconic event that

could bring millions of much-needed money to small businesses. new york's mayor says the starting gun will fire here. still damaged streets filled with 40,000 runners and millions of onlookers. >> we expect by sunday, most of the power will be back, if not all of it. >> reporter: dis350i9 the efforts to bring the power grid and subways online. there's concern that much of the course will not be back to normal, clogging commuter routes. and many are questioning whether a city crippled by a storm should be focusing on a race instead of recovery. >> it seems wrong, if one police officer leaves his job to work at a road race. >> reporter: the race begins in the city's most difficult-to-reach borough, one hard-hit by the storm.

>> it starts at staten island near the bridge. we've been cleaning up that area. and it's on main roads throughout the city. >> reporter: despite the efforts, the staten island borough president is calling the decision crazy. saying, quote, what we have here is terrible. a disaster. if they want to race, let them race with themselves. this is no time for a parade. but supporters think the opposite. >> the best thing we can do is to come together and celebrate. >> reporter: mayor michael bloomberg says it's about restarting businesses, something he says those who lost their lives would want. >> they would want us to have an economy and have a city going on for those that they left behind. >> reporter: mayor bloomberg has suggested putting a deadline on how late the final runners can cross the finish line on sunday. he has announced the race will be dedicated to the victims of the hurricane and their families. >> there may not be power. that might be scary. we're going to turn to a

frightening story out of michigan, where a highway shooter was targeting two dozen vehicles in the state. police are looking for anybody that might be involved. pierre thomas has the latest on that. pierre, this is scary stuff. >> reporter: it is, george. it's a race against time in michigan, as police try to stop someone who has been randomly shooting on the highway. for baseball fans driving along interstate 96, was shot in his left hip. >> first, call the cops. thought maybe a robber or something. on the highway. >> reporter: you see him here on the surveillance tape, limping into a gas station, looking for help. only 30 minutes earlier and only a mile away, another car on the interstate is hit with a bullet entering the back window and slicing through the car. >> somebody would have been sitting in the rear seat of the first vehicle, they would have been hit. >> reporter: since mid-october, 24 vehicles have been struck by bullets along this stretch of

i-96. >> there was a gunshot that went through the backseat of my car. >> reporter: unt one had been hurt. authorities fear there's a serial shooter out there with deadly intentions. >> we don't know why. but the big concern is, he's anonymously shooting cars. and eventually, someone's going to get killed. it's a very dangerous situation. >> reporter: a federal and state task force has been formed to catch the shooter. police have released this composite sketch of the suspect. >> somebody knows someone that's doing this. if they could call us and put him in jail where he needs to be before someone gets killed. >> reporter: the fbi, atf and crime stoppers are offering a $200,000 reward to information leading to an arrest. this could be the beginning of a nightmare scenario like we had in washington in the fall of 2002, when the d.c. snipers killed ten people over a month. >> we remember that well, pierre. thanks very much. let's get weather from sam.

back, now, at 7:43. with a series of shark attacks off the coasts of california and hawaii, one woman swimming in maui had to fight off a tiger shark. and get this. she used tae kwon do to do it. good thing she's a black belt. abc's nick watt has more on that. >> reporter: the attack took just seconds. >> it came out of nowhere. >> reporter: a great white shark taking a 14-inch chunk out of scott stevens' surfboard, off the coast of california. >> it pinned me under. and it kind of shook me. i was able to punch it and it released. >> reporter: a punch also saved mariko haugen, a woman attacked by a tiger shark off of maui. >> this one hit the side and split into the mouth. i credit my training in martial

arts. >> reporter: both scott and mariko, thanks to some quick fists live to tell their shark tale. >> all of a sudden, it was like hollywood. you know, you see the big jaws come at you. >> the reason why they say to hit them in the nose is because that's where the sensory organs are. >> reporter: only about a dozen people have been killed off the california coast since the 1960s. but this was the second terrifying great white attack in just a little over a week. another surfer was mauled off the coast near santa barbara. he died on the sand. >> too many sharks out here, man. that's my opinion. i wouldn't dare go in there. >> reporter: he's right. there are more sharks off the california coast this year. >> what's been happening off of our coast this year, as in other year, we have an enormous amount of squid. >> reporter: for "good morning america," nick watt, abc news. >> thank you, nick.

blamed on hurricane sandy. and we have new video here being released. showing the absolute ferocity of the hurricane as it made landfall. whipping winds, spreading the flames you see here, from house-to-house. along the connecticut waterfront, $14 million in real estate in that picture alone, reduced to ashes in moments. president obama, meanwhile, gets back on the campaign trail today. more polls showing him ahead in battleground states and strong approval in the way he's handled hurricane sandy. meantime, mitt romney's campaign is touting romney's recent gains in several states once thought to be solidly pro-obama, including wisconsin, pennsylvania. and we have breaking news in the penn state scandal. the district attorney of pennsylvania expected to announce charges against graham

spanier. saying that spanier will be charged with perjury, obstruction of justice. and hurricane sandy washed away halloween plans for millions of kids. but like so many people struggling through this storm and its aftermath, neighbors in new jersey come together for the little ones. dressing up. and then, they headed to the mall so everyone could enjoy a little halloween fun, if anything else, sharing candy. even threw a parade. it was, if nothing else, a much-needed break for everyone. we talked yesterday. >> what were we going to do? we saw it play out spontaneously across the east. >> we traversed to where there was power. and rang the doorbells. the kids had candy. >> a lot of people in our neighborhood that has no power, did a trunk or treat. in the trunk of a car, in a safe area, with no wires, lots of candy. >> that's terrific. >> you make it work. and they had a ball. happy halloween to everybody. we are back with "pop news."

>> reporter: sheer white-knuckle terror. the film is "flight." and this is denzel washington at his finest. the first 15 minutes, terrifying. you think, i'm in an action movie. this is unbelievable. and then, the movie takes a turn. what drew you to the script? >> it's just good material. those very things. the complexity of it. it's not your everyday action or drama. it's unique. it's a very good story. and obviously, a brilliant director. >> reporter: directed by robert zemeckis, his first live-action film since "castaway" in 2000. it is the story of a pilot that wrestles a plane to safety. but finds himself in hot water when it's discovered he had alcohol in his system. your character, is he a hero? is he a villain? is he both? >> does he have to be one or the other? he's human. >> reporter: a lot is about

addiction. how did you know how to pursue that role and that character? and how do you deal with addiction? >> i didn't try to play a drunk, in certain scenes. he thinks he's holding it together. we've all seen that. that's the saddest thing when you see someone who really thinks they got it together. and they don't. >> reporter: the biggest story to come out of that this year, of course, was whitney houston and her final days. you worked with whitney houston in "preacher's wife." how did her death touch you? >> deeply. and it's just sad to me because she's really just such a sweet girl. so much potential. and she got caught up in a vicious cycle and just couldn't win. >> reporter: you have one of the most successful marriages in hollywood, as well. 30 years? am i close? >> 30 in june. >> reporter: what's your best tip for a long and happy

"malibu country" on abc. 7:30 central. what drew you to this project? >> i love being on television. i love being on abc. and this is a fun show. i get to work with lily tomlin, sarah rue. great actors. i love television. i miss not getting to shoot the "reba" tv show when it left the air. it's on reruns now. everybody gets to see it. we love it. and "malibu country" we're excited about the premiere tomorrow night. we hope everyone will see it.
